Klabin earns PEFC forest management certification in Santa Catarina, Brazil
BRAZIL (News release) -- Klabin, Brazil's largest producer and exporter of packaging paper and sustainable paper packaging solutions, has obtained one more certification in its forest management areas in Santa Catarina, Brazil. After undergoing the certification-related audits, the forestry scope received the PEFC (Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes) seal, considered the world's preeminent forest certification system (PEFC/28-22-15). Klabin and its Special Purpose Companies (SPE) Aroeira, Guaricana, Pinheiro and Manacá - Grupo Aroeira (PEFC/28-22-16) obtained the seal after an audit process that involved the collection of samples from the field and documentation prepared by a multidisciplinary team. Klabin's partnerships with SPEs represent a business model in which a new entity is created for a specific purpose, whose activities are restricted and which could have a predetermined term of existence. When the Company adopted this model in Santa Catarina, forestry certification became an essential requirement, considering that the company uses wood produced by these SPEs. "We only work with and sell products manufactured from certified raw materials and other controlled sources, and hence environmental certifications such as this confirm that our raw material sources are economically viable, socially fair and environmentally correct", says Mireli. The PEFC certification considers Brazilian forest management standards established by the Brazilian Technical Standards Association (ABNT). Other states where the company's forest management units are located already have PEFC. Klabin is the largest producer and exporter of packaging paper and sustainable paper packaging solutions in Brazil.
