Kimberly-Clark fined $200,000 for claiming products 'Made in Australia'
Print
AUSTRALIA (From news reports) -- Consumer goods business Kimberly-Clark has agreed to a $200,000 fine after it accidentally added a 'Made in Australia' logo to products made in Germany, South Korea and the UK.

The business removed the logo as soon as it was made aware of the issue, and said it is only supposed to appear on its South Australia manufactured Kleenex toilet paper products.

"This was an unintentional web publishing error displayed in a static footer of the Kleenex Cottonelle brand website between October 2015 and February 2016," a Kimberly-Clark spokesperson said.

"All Kleenex Flushable Cleansing Clothes packaging and advertising have always accurately stated where the product is made."

The ACCC, which argued the case to the Federal Court, said the penalty was appropriate, and that it had only been seen by "hundreds" of customers.

"The representation appears to be way of oversight. It was certainly not deliberate," ACCC barrister Simon White told the court.

The fine is separate to the ACCC's case last year against Kimberly-Clark, when it argued unsuccessfully that the business' wipes aren't safe to be flushed. The Federal Court tested the products and deemed them safe, and the ACCC's appeal was subsequently dismissed.
