Greif Industries to close its Rock Hill, S.C. site this fall
Print

ROCK HILL, S.C. (From news reports) -- Ohio-based industrial packaging manufacturer Greif Industries will close its site in Rock Hill, SC by October 30. That's according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notice, or WARN letter, filed with the state Department of Employment and Workforce on July 5.

In a phone interview Tuesday, Greif's Director of Corporate Communications, T.J. Struhs said the closure is part of a consolidation of the company's five facilities in the Charlotte area. About 90 employees will be affected by the closure. Struhs said the company is trying to find positions for all.

Whether there will be layoffs remains to be seen, Struhs said. But several jobs could be leaving South Carolina.

Per the WARN letter, Greif would begin laying off workers on September 3. Struhs said some employees could transition to one of Greif's three other locations in South Carolina - it has facilities in Johnsonville, Hardeeville, and Taylors.

The Rock Hill facility manufactures recycled paperboard tubes. The location was one of 80-plus Caraustar facilities Greif acquired in the U.S. in a $1.8 billion deal in 2019.

The company's second-quarter report, released in June, showed an overall solid quarter, but also reported a drop in net sales, gross profit, and operating profit in its paper packaging and services sector.
