Firefighters battle blaze at Des Moines, Iowa International Paper mill

DES MOINES, Iowa (From news reports) -- A fire broke out at a paper mill in Des Moines on Wednesday.

At around 2 p.m. Dec. 11, the Des Moines Fire Department responded to a report of a fire at International Paper, a paper mill located in the 2800 block of Dixon Street. When firefighters arrived on scene they saw light smoke coming from the building.

"Something like this, based on the fuel load, it's going to take a tremendous amount of water to try and get it suppressed," Lieutenant Gene Emery with DMFD said. "And with that, just getting access to it. Typically these kind of facilities have what they call a high-piled storage, which means a lot of material pretty close together, sprinkler systems that are there to try and contain it, you add in the weather today, which is cold, since we basically use water we have to make sure that doesn't freeze, just battling the ice, the elements on our crews."

Everyone inside the building was able to safely evacuate and no injuries were reported.

Firefighters remained on the scene Wednesday night to extinguish the flames and into Thursday morning to monitor for hot spots.

The fire department said a piece of machinery at the facility may have started the fire. No other information has been released.
