An Environment for Good Ideas

Bensenville, Illinois, USA, 03 February 2012 -- The past two weeks have seen the Boise CHOICES team criss-crossing the country, joining hundreds of business and sustainability enthusiasts at the 2012 GreenBiz Forums in Minneapolis, New York City, and San Francisco, presented by the GreenBiz Group.
Boise launched CHOICES to create an open forum for discussing corporate responsibility, profitability, bottom-line value, and the positive social and environmental impact of paper. CHOICES seeks to provide expert professional guidance for office workers, so paper users and purchasers can make informed, effective choices about paper.
Framed by the organization’s 2012 State of Green Business report, the 2012 GreenBiz Forums brought together thought leaders and sustainability executives to define the trends, challenges, and opportunities in sustainable business today.
The CHOICES team presented a Forum workshop titled "Optimizing Office Recycling and Reducing Waste," offering tips for enhancing sustainability initiatives at the office and using paper more responsibly.
A recent poll shows that most Americans don’t believe society will ever go completely paperless. That’s because people treasure communicating in a medium that is secure, intimate, timeless, and often beautiful to touch and view. Paper is also sustainable – office paper is 100% recyclable and is made from a renewable resource that has minimal environmental impact when properly managed.
In the workshop, attendees learned key facts about paper and how the decisions they make when purchasing, using, and disposing of paper affect all three pillars of sustainability. They also learned how to more effectively recycle and manage office waste with the help of iReuse, a sustainability consulting and software company.
Not surprisingly, workshop attendees asked many of the same questions the CHOICES readers raised in a recent survey. Among the most popular questions:
- Why is recycled paper more expensive than virgin-fiber paper?
- What’s the easiest way to start a paper-recycling program at the office?
- Is it bad that recovered paper often gets exported to Asia?
“Paper is an integral material and tool for our society,” said Alexander Toeldte, Boise president and chief executive officer. “The key is to make smart choices about how, when and what kind of paper we use, both as individuals and organizations.”
