The Final Word by Jim Thompson

We forget how rapidly technology has changed — technology that has affected us, both in good ways and bad ways in the pulp and paper industry.

This past weekend, Laura and I did a quick getaway to Jekyll Island, off the coast of Georgia, USA. One of the matters commemorated there is the first transcontinental phone call. In 1915, the first transcontinental phone call was made between Jekyll Island, San Francisco, New York, and the White House.

Jekyll Island being the playground of the rich of those days, it made sense. Yet, think about how fast we have transcended this monumental event — less than 100 years and we are all carrying around devices that allow us to talk all over the word with the push of a few simple buttons.

Our challenge in the pulp and paper industry is to move ourselves back to the leading edge of technology and stop living in the past.
