Mondi Closing Louisville Facility

Louisville, Kentucky, USA 01 November 2018 -- (From news reports) -- Mondi soon will close its Louisville, Kentucky operations and lay off its local workforce.

The Louisville plant of Mondi Bags USA LLC, a U.S. affiliate of Mondi PLC, plans to close its Louisville facility and lay off its entire staff of about 100 employees.

The plans were outlined Wednesday morning in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act filing, or WARN notice, sent by the company to the Kentucky Division of Workforce and Employment Services. Those notices are then disclosed by the state to the public.

The WARN notice states the workers were notified of the plant's closure on Tuesday and that the layoffs are expected to be permanent.

Mondi anticipates the layoffs will be completed by Dec. 31 and stated in the notice that the affected employees are not represented by a union.

The company did not give a reason for the closure in the WARN notice but issued this statement late Wednesday afternoon:

"Mondi has entered into discussions around the proposal to cease production at this plant by the end of 2018. Louisville produces woven polypropylene industrial bags for the agricultural feed, pet, food and specialty chemical industries. Its product portfolio is not a core part of our business and the plant is no longer sustainable. We have explored all options for the future of the plant. We have concluded this decision is necessary to ensure the long-term success of Mondi North America's core industrial bags business. Mondi understands the impact of this decision on those affected and will treat employees fairly during this difficult time."
